PEOPLE / TALENT

Five years ago, Compass Point introduced something that felt a little bit unconventional: a full week dedicated to Rest, Reenergize, Reflect, Read, and Recreate.
At the time, we were a team of 4. Today, we’re a team of 10. While much has changed over the years, one thing has remained constant: our belief that people do their best work when they’re given the space to step away, reset, and return with a fresh perspective.
Each summer, around the halfway point of the year, our team takes a collective pause. Not because the work slows down, but because by mid-year the pace is often at its highest. Client demands, project deadlines, and day-to-day responsibilities can make it easy to spend months focused on execution without taking time to reflect on where you’ve been or where you’re headed.
For one week, our entire team disconnects from the normal rhythm of work. Projects pause, inboxes wait, and meetings disappear. The goal isn’t to catch up or stay connected from a different location. It’s to create intentional space for rest, reflection, learning, creativity, and the activities that often get pushed aside during a busy year.
One of the things we love most about R5 is that everyone experiences it differently. Some team members spend time with family, others dive into books they’ve been meaning to read, tackle personal projects, get outdoors, or simply slow down and enjoy being present. There is no checklist.
R5 is also a meaningful investment. For an entire week, the business absorbs the cost of giving every team member dedicated time away. We continue to make that investment because we’ve seen the impact year after year. People come back with new ideas, greater clarity, and renewed energy. They return more engaged, more focused, and better equipped to serve both their families and our clients. In a culture that often celebrates constant activity, this serves as a reminder that sustainable performance requires more than hard work.
Five years later, R5 has become more than a week on the calendar. It’s part of who we are and a reflection of what we believe about people, performance, and long-term success. As we prepare for another R5 Week, we’re looking forward to the opportunity to step away, recharge, get smarter, and return ready for the second half of the year.
Feel free to use our Contact Us form to leave us a message. We will be in touch when we get back to the office on June 29th.

Many boards still discuss technology as a cost to manage rather than a strategic asset to leverage. For family businesses, the question is no longer whether to invest in technology. Is your board governing technology as a support function, OR as a critical driver of the company's future success?

Family businesses rarely struggle because of strategy alone—they struggle when there is no shared purpose strong enough to unite generations. Long-term continuity depends on more than ownership, succession plans, or governance; it requires a clear reason for the family to work, lead, and build together.
